vivo and the research group for Clinical Psychology at the University of Bielefeld cooperate closely. Currently several projects are conducted with the aim to offer psychological support for affected refugees and asylum seekers.
The outpatient clinic of the University of Bielefeld focuses now also on the psychotherapeutic treatment of refugee and asylum seeking youths and adults. The refugee outpatient clinic offers diagnostic assessment of psychological problems as well as group and individual psychotherapy. An important focus lies on the treatment of refugees suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET). Since the majority of the refugee or asylum seeking patients does not possess sufficient German or English language skills, the diagnostic assessment and therapy are supported by translators.
Besides the research group for Clinical Psychology at the University of Bielefeld conducts studies that aim at improving the health care for refugees. In collaboration with the local health authorities in Bielefeld a study is conducted with the aim of examining in which manner a short psychological screening can be used within the scope of the school entry health examination which is compulsory for all newly arrived minors. The goal of implementing this short screener would be to identify indications for psychological strain as soon as possible and to refer the affected to other bodies of the health care system. The study also aims to provide more insights into past experiences and the mental health of refugee children and youths who have been exposed to war in order to be able to better adjust the diagnostic assessment and therapy that is offered at our clinic to the needs of this subgroup.
